Flash Pulmonary Edema


Flash pulmonary edema is also referred to as FPE and it is described as c condition where the symptoms associated with pulmonary edema may develop at a rapid pace. Flash pulmonary edema is often observed in patients suffering from myocardial infarctions.In case of acute myocardial infarction or mitral regurgitation, there is accumulation of fluid in the area around the lungs.

This type of pulmonary edema is associated with underlying cardiac ailments and therefore it is a form of cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Flash pulmonary edema may be caused by aortic regurgitation or heart failure. In case of increase in left ventricular pressure. Therefore when a patient showing signs of flash pulmonary edema is admitted in the emergency ward the main focus of treatment should be on the underlying cause like myocardial infarctions. While at the same time the patient has to be revived with supply of oxygen.

The medial practitioner ensures that the patient is getting adequate oxygen supply, administration of diuretics and medication of decrease in pulmonary hypertension. In case there is a recurrence of flash pulmonary edema in the patient, it may be attributed to setenosis in the renal artery and hypertension. Therapy for this condition includes effective management of blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart failure and renovascular disease.
